    Serra Club of McAllen

Serra International has 675 Serra clubs with approximately 21,000 members in over 35 countries. In 1935, the founding Serrans, a small group of laymen in Seattle, Washington, chose as their patron Blessed Junipero Serra, the 18th century Franciscan missionary priest who established missions in California and Mexico.

Serra is an organization of Catholic lay persons of all ages from all walks of life who share a deep faith and want to incorporate the teachings of Christ into their daily lives. Our Mission is to foster, affirm, and promote vocations to ministry in the Catholic Church, especially to foster vocations to the priesthood and the religious life by offering affirmation to those who already serve the Church, and by encouraging new Church vocations through prayer, education, and collaboration with their bishops and Church vocations offices. Spiritual growth is encouraged among members as the men and women of Serra work together and develop a distinct fellowship. Each club strives to become a "university of Christian principles" that helps members respond to the Pope's challenge to them to prove it is possible to live the Sermon on the Mount with all the radicalism it entails.

The Serra Club of McAllen, Club No. 464, was chartered in March of 1977; it is part of District 126 in Region 10. The club meets at the Our Lady of Sorrows conference room next to the main office on the 2nd Saturday of each month. The meetings begin at 8:30 AM with breakfast being served to the membership, followed by the business meeting at 9:00 AM. Meetings feature a variety of speakers, panel discussions, films, and group discussions on subjects which challenge Catholics to enrich their faith.

The Serra Club of McAllen membership set yearly stewardship goals for the Diocese of Brownsville. During these past years we have been very blessed to have been able accomplish and support the following projects:

    ·         Clergy Appreciation Banquet
    ·         Seminarian Recognition Christmas Social
    ·         Poor Clares – St. Joseph Chapel in Alamo
    ·         Corporate Communion in Deanery
    ·         Religious Sisters Appreciation Banquet
    ·         Altar Server Appreciation Brunch
    ·         Bishop's Annual Appeal
    ·         Annual Seminarian Banquet

Anyone interested in becoming a member of Serra Club of McAllen or for more information is invited to contact Ms. Yvonne Portcella at serraclub@oladyofsorrows.org
